Do other atheists extend their disbelief beyond religion?

I’m an atheist and disbelieve all supernatural claims of religion (meaning I’m OK with most of Buddhism). But I also pull my hair out when it comes to other topics:
Dowsing, alien abduction, magnet therapy, homeopathy, 2012 prophesy, bigfoot claims, crop circles, shadow people, psychics.

In other words, anything for which there’s not strong, repeatable physical evidence. Or in the case of medical cures, work better than a placebo does.

Am I alone in this? Just curious.

  1. Atheism means nothing more than no belief in deity. That’s ALL the word means.

    But having said that…

Yes, there are plenty of atheists who additionally consider themselves skeptics and freethinkers, and are very stern against pseudo-science. Go look up James Randi or Michael Shermer.

  2. Not at all. Atheists tend to be skeptics about that sort of thing as well.

  3. I feel the same, but I had a weird experience with a Ouija board the one and only time I did it about 15 years ago.

  4. I’d think quite a lot do – it would be odd to demand evidence for gods but not ghosts for example.

  5. I’m sure you are not alone. While belief or disbelief in any of the stories you mentioned are not necessarily exclusive to one another, I would expect most atheists to demand more empirical evidence before accepting any of these examples as they have been presented. To do less would be inconsistent with our resolve to discredit the biggest, most widely propagated myth of them all.

  6. There are a ton of things that I don’t believe in. A lot of which you have listed, I am a man of science and do not take the word of anyone without adequate proof for their claims.

  7. I do, but I’m less vocal on it because lets face it… big foot believers aren’t running amok political agendas and wars… if they were, I’d spend my thought on the issue directed at them.

However, I occasionally like to delude myself in fairy tales… but I keep in mind its for entertainment, not actuality.

  9. I’m similar in that I too apply rational thought to every aspect of my life. If someone makes a claim, I want to know the evidence behind that claim and if it isn’t acceptable evidence, then it is discarded.
